Is there really life after your business?
Whether you’ve owned your business for five years or fifty, it can be hard to imagine a life without it. As your greatest asset, you have spent countless hours putting your blood, sweat, and tears into creating your success and making your business everything it is today.
But ask yourself, how do you feel when you’re not at work and the phone rings? Can a day off go by without a call to check in on the office? Finding the right balance between work and home life can be hard for anyone but is especially difficult when you have a business to run. Maybe you’re in the position where you’re much more hands-on than you would like to be. When you have so many people relying on your input, it can be hard to make the time to do the things you love. And while the odd evening and weekend provides an opportunity to socialize or take part in your favorite hobby – is it enough to lead a fulfilled life?
Think about all the things you used to enjoy before you became a business owner. Did you like nothing more than an impromptu round of golf in the afternoon or fishing on the weekends? Maybe you would like to spend more time gardening, or even volunteering at a local shelter. Building a business and watching it prosper is one of the most fulfilling experiences, but once you reach a certain point in your life you realize that you are not your business.
Outside of it there are so many things that occupy your time – not only can you take up new hobbies and indulge in old ones, but you can also broaden your personal horizons. That might mean visiting places in Europe you’ve never seen, meeting up with old friends, or even learning a new language. There’s more to life than business, but when your business has been your life, sometimes you just need to take a step back to see it.
Your circumstances might have changed significantly over the years, perhaps you plan to start a family or maybe you’re becoming a grandparent. There’s no age limit for exiting your business. But do you have the time to be doing what you enjoy? Is it a case of putting your business on the backburner while you make the most of life?
This might not be a question you can answer right now. But know that there are several ways that you can free up your time, whether that means enhancing the value of your business with the view to sell in the future or putting an exit strategy in place to start doing the things you love right away.
